From a friends point of view
I bought this book as a gift for a friend. She's always felt that she can communicate with the spirits, but din't have the experience to do it at will. I saw this book and though of her. She seems to be very involved in it and she's told me that she loves the book. So as a gift for someone looking to develope their ablilities, this book was a winner.

I know this is probably not the sort of review people want to read, but there are no thers here and I think reviews encourage would be customers.

Raise Your Cultural IQ: Asia & the Pacific

Authors: Louisa Nedkov and Louisa A. Nedkov

First Thing to Pack for a Trip to Asia & the Pacific
This is a great book! It is incredibly information-packed and focuses on the key information a traveller needs to know, which is crucial in this part of the world where custom may prevent your hosts from letting you know you have made a terrible gaff. The book itself is amazingly compact and small in format - you will feel like you have an encyclopedia at your fingertips, while carrying something small enough that it could be packed in a purse for quick reference checks in any situation.

Spelling: Development, Disabilities, and Instruction
Published in Paperback by York Press (November, 1995)

Spelling
In a field where there are not a lot of reference materials, this book provides a thorough, comprehensive, detailed discussion of how children learn (or do not learn) to spell. It is remarkably easy to read for the high level of information it contains. If I could have just one book on spelling, this would be it.

Sweetbriar Bride (#2 Seattle Sweetbriar Series/Brenda Wilbee)
Published in Paperback by Harvest House Publishers, Inc. (September, 1986)
Author: Brenda Wilbee
Average review score:

charming in every way
Sweetbriar and Sweetbriar Bride are an endearing tale of the Denny and Boren families trek west and the settling of Seattle. This historical account is accessable to all ages. It is a great way to introduce children to the settling of the Pacific Northwest. It is a shame it is no longer in print.

Transcendental Wild Oats and Excerpts from the Fruitlands Diary
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Common Pr (November, 1981)
Author: Louisa May Alcott
Average review score:

Thes sixties wasn't the first time!
The Fruitlands commune was a fascinating experiment that took place in beautiful Harvard, Mass. when Louisa was a child. "Transcendental Wild Oats" is her brief and affectionate send-up of the ridiculous ideals and characters she remembers from Fruitlands, among them her father. "Fruitlands Diary," her actual diary from her childhood, offers great insight into daily life from this time period, with affectionate comments here and there added when she was an older woman.

Transcendental Wild Oats and Excerpts from the Fruitlands Diary (Avenel Readers Library Series)

Common sense
When Louisa May Alcott was a little girl, her father moved the family to live in an experimental commune in the orchard town of Harvard, Massachusetts. The idea was that inhabitants would live on unleavened bread and apples, abstain from sex, and expound on the universe. The experiment lasted only from July to December, when it predictably fell apart. In adulthood, Louisa trained a comic eye on the whole experience, and wrote this brief, funny parody of it, with only names changed to protect the innocent. Also included here are girlhood diaries kept by Louisa during this experience, which offer insight into what life was like at such a place in those days. These diaries are made doubly amusing by a few marginal notes Louisa added to them later in life. For anyone interested in Alcott family history, or in the crazy days of the transcendentalists (the 19th century's version of the sixties), this short work is a must read.

An entertaining criticism of conditions for working girls ..
If you've read and reread all of Louisa May Alcott's books, and loved her portrayals of brave girls trying to make their way in a harsh world, you must read this "lost" novel, "Work." It is well-written, engaging and humorous, very much in the same style as her other novels for girls, yet with more of a depth of maturity to her characters. If you've read "An Old Fashioned Girl" you will see a lot of "Polly" in the working girls portrayed in this novel. Read it and rejoice in this "new" Alcott novel!
